Horse show day

At my daughter's hunter-jumper show. Beautiful day - about 70 degrees, clear sky. Great for an outdoor show.

"Secretariat"

I finally saw "Secretariat."  What a fun movie about horses and horse people!  Even though I knew the outcome of the Triple Crown races, I was still "at the edge of my seat" for each one.

A useful data source

While it has nothing specifically to do with horses or horse people, one of my favorite sources for useful economic data is "Residential Design & Build Magazine" which I receive by e-mail.  Here is the magazine's URL:  http://www.rdbmagazine.com/.  If you are interested, you can sign-up for the e-mail newsletter on the top-right of the homepage.

New article is in the May 2010 edition "Central Florida Equestrian" magazine

Central Florida Equestrian magazine (May 2010 edition) published my article entitled "Uh Oh!  Why you should have -- and use -- a second-nature operations risk management plan."  Many thanks to Courtney Bass Weinzimer, the Publisher-Editor of Central Florida Equestrian, for including this article.

Here is a link to the online version of Central Florida Equestrian magazine:  www.scribd.com/full/30264009?access_key=key-d9a2ylx60tywzz2zund.  The article is on pages 18 - 20.

Interesting article in 2/26/10 edition of "The Chronicle of the Horse"

I read an article in the February 26, 2010 edition of The Chronicle of the Horse entitled "Increased Safety Is An Added Benefit to Trainer Certification" (pages 32-33) by Susie Schoellkopf.  As an attorney (and as a parent of a juvenile rider), I found Ms. Schoellkopf's stance towards trainer/rider safety awareness to be both enlightening and common-sense.  I have also been reading "The Checklist Manifesto" by Atul Gawande, which advocates for the use of pre-determined checklists as a risk management device.  I suggest that equine professionals read both the Schoellkopf article and the Gawande book.  Applying this sort of proactive approach will cause equine professionals to make their risk management protocols second-nature so they are always being implemented, while also permitting the professionals to focus on their principal equestrian activities.

Welcome to my blog

Hello to my new readers.  My name is Phil Kabler, and I am a business lawyer who has spent many years in the world of horses.  (I am also a business law professor at the University of Florida - Warrington College of Business Administration and at Santa Fe College, both located in Gainesville, Florida.)  Currently, I am the proud adopted "parent" of Rosy, a 12 year old Welsh-Connemara mix mare (that is actually her picture on the the blog, not mine...).  My family (including Rosy, of course) go to many horse shows, so I have the pleasure of being around many "horse people".

Since I spend a good deal of my "off time" looking at, reading about, and researching equine industry business and legal issues, I am going to use this blog as a vehicle to share my discoveries.  Please feel free to comment on, question, add-to, and -- overall -- enjoy the postings.

"See" you around!
